The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.
We present a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of the horror genre: Settle in with your significant other and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its streaming debut on Hulu. At first glance, it could look like standard physical horror, but within Together exists a deep meditation about how we choose to love our partners.
A Directorial Debut Delving into Partnership Complexities
Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a special spark to their characters, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.
The story commences when the couple transition from the urban environment to the countryside for her career. A commonly used plot device, of course, but that’s mostly where the conventions end. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.
An Otherworldly Trigger
While hiking near their new home, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim fall into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a strange force starts to affect the duo. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.
The entire film is a methodically building horror experience, blending moments of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and wraps them up in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.
Nuanced Portrayals
A great deal of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.
In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He fears the concept of completely losing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for mobility.
Shanks’ smartest move is that he never makes either of his characters the definite antagonist.
The couple confront the sort of issues that are inherent in long-term unions a decade in. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their bond.
Allegory and Meaning
While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor does not come across as clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama work together symbiotically.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could act as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion inspire anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply look at your other half and say, “We could get through that together”?
Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can embark on today.
Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu at present.
